ROAD SAFETY, SECURITY, PEACE AND COHESION BUILDING CAMPAIGN WORKSHOP

I wish to kindly invite all kenyans of goodwill in Nakuru and its environs to the above mentioned workshop, which is intended to involve all the matatu drivers and their conductors, boda-boda operators and motor cycle operators within Nakuru. It is scheduled to take place from the 5th – 7th November 2009 at the Menengai Social Hall. Please find attached our tentative calendar of events.

This is in an effort to initiate the cultivation of a reconciliation process and implant the seed of peace and cohesion building among the youths of Nakuru, one of the towns that was heavily affected by the post election violence in the period of December 2007 to March 2008. The youths, especially those in the transportation sector were the ones most involved and affected by the fracas and the violence. With most of the reforms yet to be initiated and the next general elections ever drawing nearer by the day, the need to start a grassroots-upward effort in peace and cohesion building is now of the utmost urgency.

With the same breath, the Christmas holidays are just round the corner, more or less in a month’s time and the issue of road safety and security is again breathing heavily upon us. We feel that, in collaboration with all citizen/constituents, the District Commissioner's office Nakuru, the Town Clerk’s Nakuru, the Traffic Commandant Nakuru as well as the transport sector associations in Nakuru, we shall be able to lobby through workshops to all drivers of public vehicles and instruments and constantly reminded them of the:

  1. TRAFFIC RULES and REGULATIONS

  2. Importance of discipline on the road (ending corruption and bribery)

  3. Need to cooperate with the police services in matters that pertain to security

  4. Need to uphold law and order in their areas of residence

  5. URGENCY, IMPORTANCE, BENEFITS AND THE NEED TO UPHOLD PEACE AND COHESION AMONG COMMUNITIES

We humbly propose that:

i)                         We shall initiate a certificate of attendance and qualification that should be produced by the holder at any time that it’s requested for, in compliment to that of good conduct.

ii)                         All border-border and motor cycle operators should bear identification numbers on their reflector jumpers (similar to those of athletes) for easier identification by their passengers in case they disappear after an accident and ones that should identify their routes of operation.

iii)                       All motor cycle operators should go to a driving school and bear a valid license to minimize the accidents that are on rise on our roads, they as well as their passengers should wear helmets whenever driving/riding.

iv)     The motor cycle and border-border operators should have a specific point of operation away from the major roads to reduce traffic jams and congestion just as the matatus have their specific stages of operation.

ii)                         Just like the PSV’s are color coded, all motor-cycles should be color coded according to their capacities.

110 cc                          Yellow helmets and Yellow reflector jackets

125 cc                          Red helmets and Red reflector jackets

150 cc                          Blue helmets and Blue reflector jackets

200 cc and above          Green helmets and green reflector jackets

vi)        Through the office of the Town Clerk, all matatu routes within town and estate service should be allocated specific pick and drop points along their routes and the same insisted upon the general public.

vii)        The general public should be impressed upon to stop walking on the tarmac roads anywhere within the town and instead use the pedestals, side-walks and side-roads.

This we feel should go a long way in reducing the number of traffic accidents on our roads, especially those that involve matatus, motor-cycle operators and border-border operators and enhance peace buiding among our communities.

The District Commissioner and the Traffic commandant Nakuru gave us their word that they shall attend the workshop among other invited guests.
